Tips for Building A Better Burger

  • Read the rules
  • Keep up to date – read food magazines, newspaper food sections and the latest cooking shows
  • Be creative – think outside the box
  • Choose a good name
  • List ingredients, including the bun and condiments, in the exact order that they are used
  • Include every detail of building the burger in step-by-step directions
  • Make sure to meet the CFIA standards of cooking meat – beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 71 degrees Celsius

GNARLY HEAD's THE GNARLIEST BURGER RECIPE CONTEST IS INTENDED TO BE CONDUCTED IN BRITISH COLUMBIA AND ALBERTA ONLY AND SHALL BE CONSTRUED AND EVALUATED ACCORDING TO APPLICABLE CANADIAN LAW. THE CONTEST IS OPEN TO RESIDENTS OF LEGAL DRINKING AGE ONLY. NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY. VOID IN WHOLE OR PART WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW. ENTRY IN THIS CONTEST CONSTITUTES ACCEPTANCE OF THESE CONTEST RULES (THE "CONTEST RULES").

Provincial Liquor Agencies are not connected with this contest in any manner whatsoever, and is not liable in any way whatsoever in regard to any matter which relates to this contest.

1. No purchase necessary to enter or win contest

2. The “Gnarliest Burger Recipe” contest (“Contest”) start on March 1 2010 and ends on May 31 2010 (the “Entry Period”). Residents from Alberta may enter the contest until June 30 2010. The sponsor of this contest is GNARLY HEAD.

3. Eligibility: This contest is open to legal residents of British Columbia, Canada who are at least nineteen (19) years of age or older at time of entry, except for the following:

  • Employees of Select Wine Merchants, Gnarly Head (collectively, the "Sponsors"), employees and contractors of Select Wine Merchants, the provincial liquor agencies, liquor licensees, their employees and members of their immediate families or of the aforementioned or persons with whom they are domiciled are not eligible. For the purpose of these Contest Rules, "immediate families" means husband, wife, spouse, mother, father, brother, sister, son and/or daughter, whether or not they reside in the same household.
  • Professional chefs (an individual who derives more than 75% of his/her income employed in the culinary arts as a chef)

Sponsors shall have the right at any time to require proof of identity and/or eligibility to participate in the Contest. Failure to provide such proof within a reasonable period of time may result in disqualification. All personal and other information requested by and supplied to Sponsors for the purpose of this Contest must be truthful, complete, accurate and in no way misleading. Sponsors reserve the right to disqualify any entry or entrant in its and their sole discretion, should any entry or entrant at any stage contain and/or supply untruthful, incomplete, inaccurate or misleading personal details and/or information.

4. How to enter: You may enter either online OR by mail between March 1 2010 and May 31 2010 (until June 30 2010 for AB residents). You may enter online by visiting www.gnarlyhead.com/canada (the “Contest Website”). To enter via mail, send the Name, Address, Date of Birth, Phone, Email, Recipe and Photo to Select Wine Merchants Ltd. #130 – 1152 Mainland St. Vancouver BC V6B4X2). All entries must be received by May 31 2010 (June 30 2010 for AB residents)

ONLY THREE (3) ENTRY PER PERSON, HOUSEHOLD AND/OR PER E-MAIL/MAILING ADDRESS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

The Sponsor, prize suppliers and any and all Internet server(s) and access provider(s) and prize providers, and each of their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, parent corporations and advertising and promotional agencies, and all of their officers, directors, shareholders, employees and agents are not responsible for: any incorrect or inaccurate entry information; human errors; lost, misdirected or destroyed mail entries; technical malfunctions; failures, omissions, interruptions, deletions or defects of any telephone network, computer online systems, computer equipment, servers, providers, or software, including without limitation any injury or damage to participant's or any other person's computer relating to or resulting from participation in the Contest; inability to access the Entry Site or any web pages thereof; theft, tampering, destruction, or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries; data that is processed late or incorrectly or is incomplete or lost due to telephone, computer or electronic malfunction or traffic congestion on telephone lines or the Internet or any web site (including the Entry Site) or for any other reason whatsoever; typographical, printing or other errors; or any combination thereof. Proof of entering information at Entry Site is not considered proof of delivery or receipt. Illegible, incomplete, and duplicate entries will be disqualified. All entries become the property of the Sponsors and will not be acknowledged or returned. False, fraudulent or deceptive entries or acts shall render entrants ineligible. By entering the Contest, entrants affirm that they have read and accepted these Official Rules. Any entry information collected from the Contest shall be used only in a manner consistent with the consent given by entrants at the time of the entry, with these Official Rules. In case of a dispute as to the identity of the entrant, the entry will be accepted or rejected at the absolute discretion of Select Wine Merchants Ltd.

5. Guidelines:

  • All burger recipes must be composed of grilled patties formed from ground beef or ground alternative foods (strictly limited to Buffalo, Bison) prepared on a (standard grill) and served on buns or other bread products. Burgers may include any combination of condiments, spreads, cheeses and toppings. No side dishes.
  • Each submitted recipe must be the original and include the name of the recipe, readily available ingredients (found at most well-stocked supermarkets), standard measurements, few lines on the recipe pairing with Gnarly Head wines and be written to serve six (6) people. Important: Ingredients must be listed in order of use, followed by step by step instructions, including cooking time. All recipes must be completely preparable within two hours. The Top 10 entrants as selected by the judging panel may be contacted to provide a photograph of their burger presentation.
  • The recipe must not have knowingly been previously published or have won another award, and the right to submit it must not be restricted in any way. Submission of a recipe is a warranty that the contestant owns all copyrights and other intellectual property rights to the recipe and constitutes an assignment of these rights to Select Wine Merchants Ltd. Sponsors and their employees, officers, and agents, and members of the Judging Panel, will not be held liable for any copyright infringements or any prior exclusively rights to any recipe submitted

6. Judging: The following guidelines will be used in both preliminary and final rounds:

  • Visual appeal
  • Name of recipe
  • Ease of preparation
  • Taste
  • Food & wine pairing

Recipes that do not follow contest rules will be disqualified. Qualified recipes will be reviewed by an independent panel of food and wine professionals [Tim Ellison, Rob Feenie, Judith Lane, Rhonda May, Werner Schonberger and Kasey Wilson], who will select the top 10. On July 13th 2010, the recipes will be prepared by the students of the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver and tasted by the panel of judges to determine the two (2) Cook-Off Finalists (“Finalists”). The Cook-Off will be held in Vancouver on Wednesday July 28 2010. In the presence of the two (2) Finalists, students of the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts will prepare the recipes and the burgers will be tasted by the panel of judges to determine the winner. In both the preliminary judging and the Cook-Off, the decisions of the judges are final and binding.

7. Winners Selection: Two (2) winners will be selected by the independent panel of judges as Finalists. Finalists will be notified by either telephone or email and must respond within 2 (two) days of notification. Upon notification, the selected potential winner must respond by telephone to the contact number provided in the notification, and the selected potential winner's response must be received by Sponsors within five (5) business days of such notification. If the selected potential winner does not respond in accordance with these Contest Rules, he/she will be disqualified and will not participate in the Final Cook off and another potential winner will be selected. Please note that dates are subject to change. Each Finalist will receive confirmation as to date (as of this day :July 28th) , location (as of this day: 39th & Cambie BC Liquor Store, 5555 Cambie Street, Vancouver), and availability of supplies for the Cook-Off. Additional rules governing the Cook-Off finals will be made available to the Finalists. The selected potential winner shall be required to answer, without assistance of any kind, whether mechanical or otherwise, a time-limited mathematical skill-testing question during a pre-arranged telephone call, to comply with these Contest Rules and to return the Release.

If travel time to the Cook-Off location exceeds three (3) hours, Sponsors will provide 1 night accommodation for each finalist and one (1) meal certificate.

8. Cook-Off Prizes: The Cook-Off Judging Panel will select:

  • A Grand Prize Winner for the Gnarliest Burger, who will receive a Weber Barbecue and have his/her winning recipe published in TASTE Magazine and www.gnarlyhead.com
  • A Runner-up Prize, for the other Finalist, who will receive a Gift Certificate for Dinner at the Pacific Culinary institute for two (2) people

9. Conduct. By entering this Contest, entrant agrees to be bound by these Contest Rules, which will be posted at the Contest Website and can be requested at Select Wine Merchants, #130 – 1152 Mainland Street, Vancouver BC V6B 4X2 throughout the Contest Period (for which a self-addressed, postage paid envelope must be included). Entrant further agrees to be bound by the decisions of the Sponsors, which shall be final and binding in all respects. Sponsors reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to disqualify any entrant found to be: (a) violating the Contest Rules; (b) tampering or attempting to tamper with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or the Contest Website; (c) violating the terms of service, conditions or use and/or general rules or guidelines of any Sponsors property or service; and/or (d) acting in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person. CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE THE CONTEST WEBSITE OR ANY RELATED WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE CONTEST MAY BE A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS. SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSORS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO SEEK REMEDIES AND DAMAGES TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO CRIMINAL PROSECUTION.

If for any reason, in the opinion of the Contest Sponsors, in their sole discretion, the Contest is not capable of running as originally planned, or if the administration, security, fairness, integrity or the proper conduct of the Contest is corrupted or adversely affected, including by reason of infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures or any other causes beyond their control, Contest Sponsors reserve their right to cancel, terminate, modify, amend, extend or suspend the Contest including cancelling any method of entry, and select a winner from previously received eligible entries. The Contest Sponsors reserve their right in their sole discretion to disqualify any individual they find to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or to be acting in violation of the Rules or otherwise in a disruptive manner.

10. Use of Personal Information. Entrant grants Sponsors the right to: (a) use his or her personal information for the purpose of administering the Contest; (b) use his or her name, photograph, likeness, voice, prize information and/or biographical information for publicity and promotional purposes without further compensation unless prohibited by law; and (c) use his or her name and his or her respective city and province of residence in connection with the Contest Website, other related websites and/or any other media now known or hereafter devised. (d) from time to time, send contest participants relevant information concerning upcoming promotions, contests, special event invitations. By providing your information and opting-in at the Contest website, Sponsors may provide you with information relating to new and existing products, coupons, product sampling, and news regarding upcoming promotions. Personal information will not be provided to any third party other than as provided for in these Contest Rules. Sponsors will be required to protect all personal information in a manner that is consistent with Sponsors policy available at: http://www.selectwines.ca.
